2012 packraft footage

Post by scotticus on Tue 24 Jan 2012, 1:24 am

New packraft design and video footage for 2012. The packraft was elongated by 18 inches in the stern to prevent endering and makes it more surfable. It has a narrower and more upturned bow. The skirt was overhauled so that it pulls off the raft like a hardshells skirt and acts as a submersion deck unlike before. The boaters showed off some combat rolls but it wasnt in waves or anything, just rolling in pools like youd see at the bottom of the drops at Sixth Water. But they are more stable latterally than a hardshell. The packraft has an appeal for those who wish to hike in and out of from the river being that they only weigh five lbs and roll up to about the size of a watermelon. They really wouldnt serve much purpose for most other kakers though, but they do make a great bed when flipped upside down or as a bathtub

Class 5 is really pushing it as far as capability. They are more of a class lV creeking, class lll bigwater , flat water and mild ocean surf craft.

The Baylee1 by feathercraft is another great contender. Instead of having a skirt, it is self bailing and has an inflatable floor whereas the Alpacka rafters install a short inflated sleeping pad stuffed in the floor. The Baylee1 is twice the weight but more durable. The company Feathwrcraft has a long reputable history of building high quality boats. Both types of packrafts can be hardily patched in the field using a roll of waterproof Tyvek tape available at Home depot.

Not sure what video is trying to be referenced, but here's some good packrack action with the new stern:
