New Black Canyon Scheduled Releases for 2012

Post by charliev on Sat 11 Feb 2012, 12:53 am

Fellow Paddlers:

Long story (at least a beers worth) of how we got here, but efforts lead by American Whitewater and others we have negotiated scheduled releases in Black Canyon for 2012 and future seasons. The scheduled releases are similar to the scheduled dates we had in 2008~2010…not based on water availability like last year (2011). Mostly good news for paddlers, but we had to give up a few things in the spirit of compromise.

We will have 9 scheduled releases per year, 3x Sat/Sun weekends and one 3 day weekend during April, May or the first 5 days of June. Going forward there will not be any releases in most of June or July (after June 5th is Bonneville Cut Throat (BCT) trout spawning season). Continued water quality and fish monitoring could possibly modify the agreement after 3 years (2012~2014), but isn’t expected to eliminate the scheduled flows.

For 2012 the release dates are shifted towards the end of the window to take advantage of anticipated early irrigation flows. The release dates this year will be: April 28 and 29, May 5 and 6, May 19 and 20, June 1, 2 and 3. Based on current snow pack, releases are expected to be mostly in the lower 900 cfs range this year…but anything is possible, particularly when predictions are dependent on weather and runoff.

On scheduled days, flows of 900 cfs or inflow (inflow is into Soda Reservoir adjusted for downstream irrigation withdrawals), whichever is greater, will be provided on each day. Releases will begin at 10 a.m. and end at 4 p.m. Between adjoining release days, night-time flows of 200 cfs will be provided.

Please spread the word and plan some trips to the Bear this spring! Also remember to decontaminate your boat and gear, particularly your booties when paddling different rivers. The Black Canyon is completely overrun with New Zealand mud-snails as are a number of other rivers.

Let me know if you have questions or want more details.

Thanks Charlie!

I did not know that. Googling found a doc that says they are throughout northern Utah actually:
http://savesilvercreek.com/Pdf_files/NZMS%20Conference%20Notes.pdf
Here is a map, that works in IE, but not Chrome:
http://nas.er.usgs.gov/taxgroup/mollusks/newzealandmudsnaildistribution.aspx
From this map, they are in the Ogden below Pineview, Weber, Provo, Spanish Fork, Logan, Blacksmith fork.... crazy.
I know that fishermen's boots and gear can spread them too, and I see them in a bunch of places that are not kayak spots, but still, this is something to be aware of for sure; need to clean the mud off of boots and everything, when changing drainages. I have had this in the back of my mind regarding zebra and quagga mussels; at least they are not all over Utah... yet.

Thanks for getting the dates on the releases posted. I was just looking earlier this week to see if anything has been posted yet. After last year, it was nice having so many releases but overall it seemed to be less boaters then when the releases are announced or planned. Most of the times when I was there, usually very few people. Again, thanks for the work on this.

Charlie,

I noticed that the web-site doesn't show a release for this weekend. It seems more or less that they forgot to update it. http://www.pacificorp.com/es/hydro/hl/wr/br/bgd.html

You mentioned that there is a release this weekend. Do you know if that is still happening?

Thanks for everything you have done. It means a lot to have such a great run available!

Beard,

Another page on that sight shows a release for June 1,2 and 3. It's going down. Be there!

Is anyone planning on running it on Saturday morning? I'd be heading up from Ogden and would have room for two others. If I make the drive, I want to make sure others are going though.

We are headed up Saturday. One from Utah county and the other from Davis county. If you want we could jump in with you to save on gas. Give me a call.
