edit: Eggs putin: riverwide wood

Post by wasatchbill on Mon 12 Mar 2012, 3:01 am

Weber river:
On 89 to Riverdale, one of the worst spots is just below an overhead pipe (which is a great marker, with a river right eddy and portage if needed). This is an old image which does not show the wood, but it has the pipe:
http://maps.google.com/?ll=41.13843,-111.93553&spn=0.001446,0.002368&hnear=Riverdale,+Weber,+Utah&t=w&z=19
This can be bank scouted from the vacant lot upstream of the pipe (its for sale; you can pretend you are thinking about buying the lot :-) Pretty sweet lot actually). If anyone has time to help work on this, please let me know. How about an 89 to Uinta run.

Below 24th street (OPP), the railroad trestle bridge above 21st street is still mostly riverwide wood. This can be scouted and portaged on river right. Still hoping the county will clear this; dozens of logs.
edit: (the railroad said they would clear it...)

Weber river, 89 to Riverdale: there are two almost riverwide strainers (first one described above, left sneak for the second one), and slide 2 has bad wood in the center and right.
Over a hundred logs that are easy to avoid; reminiscent of a Uintas run.

Ogden river has a surprising amount of wood moving at the low flow; basically looks good (way better than 89 to Riverdale!), but there is a log below the narrows choke below the hot springs; a wood dam in the diversion pond below the Narrows, a new log by the Rainbow Gardens turn, etc.

Weber River, 89 to Riverdale run; summarizing the info above:
"89 to Riverdale strainer #1": described in the first post, right after a big overhead pipe. There is a left slot/log boof, and a right eddy, and a right portage if desired.

"89 to Riverdale strainer #2": This is about a 1/3 of a mile below strainer #1.
Here's a couple photos, that show the main channel blocker riverwide with multiple trunks:
https://picasaweb.google.com/111448969306385292049/Weber_strainer#
There is a left channel sneak that is bumpy, but goes fine. Note that you would not want to roll under this log, because there is a second trunk and branches underwater right behind the first one. The left eddy looks like an ok last-resort eddy.

Slide 2 (after the Uinta bridge drop, after Slide 1 is Slide 2): note that the center log is just under the surface, not really visible from above. This goes on the left (at least it did recently).

These are all no problem for an experienced boater who is good at boat scouting and eddy hopping; but if an intermediate was expecting a class III run like last year and wandered in to one of these unexpectedly, it could go bad quick. If anyone wants to work on any of these, PM or email. I am willing to make an effort with a group, but these are big and I suspect they will be there all spring.

A large tree fell riverwide across the Weber right below the Eggs putin.
Who can help to get it out tomorrow afternoon or evening?

Could also head to OPP or Riverdale after for a bit of paddling.
Cheers
