Hen-Tag Up to 312

Post by Wil on Wed 21 Mar 2012, 1:19 pm

So what is a good level to run this at in a kayak? Not really wanting to scrape down, nor looking for epic surf or anything, but more want to scout the run so I can take family and friends down in a raft later in the season, and see what areas of concern exist.

If 312 is high enough, does anyone want to run it on Saturday?

Also, the EF page says 312, but when you click on the gauge, it only says 267. Is that normal?

yes, it's normal for EF to be jacked. my opinion is 300 is too low.

EF lags in updating the gauges. Go by the gauge (they lag compared to real time as it is; they update every hour). I can't even get to EF this AM, can you?

Bill, I can get directly to the Hen-Tag EF page, as I have it as a favorite. It was strange, as it is now the value of the gauge, but the gauge never was above 267, so not sure where EF pulled that out of.

So what levels is HenTag worth while to kayak? Again, not really looking for excitement or anything, just a chance to get on the water and do some scouting.

250 was quite a bit low at the end of the season last year, and would only be worth it if you are really hard up. When its over 325 its not bad, Croyden wave is surfable at most levels.

Figured I'd throw my 2 cents in on this run (since it might be all I get to do this summer, if anything, given my recent back issues). Spring runoff, this time of year, should add roughly 50-100cfs, between Echo Res. and Hen-Tag, by the time it's down to the 1st drop of the Boulder Garden, and up to a couple hundred cfs by the time it gets down to Taggart's. With flows below ~400cfs, there are plenty to skills building opportunities in/around the boulders and a decent little surf wave at Taggart's Rapid. Water flow at Taggart's usually looks about double what's coming out of Echo, to me anyways. Need visual confirmation of this theory, though.
