North Fork Championships

Post by wasatchbill on Wed 06 Jun 2012, 10:36 pm

Edit: Since I managed to stay awake on the drive back (barely), I'm making this a North Fork Championships thread.

Great article; great quote from Rush Sturges:
“I didn’t have my best race but I’m just happy to have survived it,” Sturges said afterward. “I think every kayaker feels the same way. Just running Jake’s on its own is a scary thing to do. When you couple a race in it just adds to the intensity factor. End of the day, everybody getting to the bottom safely, it was a very successful event.”

incredible, gate 1 and 2 of the finals day! and the boats people chose to be fast. that hurricane from Ben Luck, the favored wild card (sp?), and the guy running an rpm max to name just a few.

best part: Ryan Casey, the local boy winning it and getting a 4k check! hot damn! great to see the race come off safely and such a massive crowd. cant wait to see who got the best single move award and cats claw/brown stout award.
my vote would be the guy pulling off the accidental stern pirouette in the 1st gate/eddy gate area. full 360 to brace to landing in line to get around the gate. incredible.
pysched to see the footage when i have more time. cheers!

Arial footage from the quadrocopters! Man, makes me wish it was still happening; really captures the scene.
Ryan Lucas styling Rodeo Hole (somehow) at 3:38; he must make a boof stroke you don't see.

This the best shot of Rodeo Hole I've seen; from the far bank. This feature tended to shove boaters all the way right, into the right bank rocks.

Tyler Bradt stomping the boof!

Absolutely man! I stole that from Tylers Facebook page; it was from Ben Marr; not sure if he is the photog though (kinda doubt it, because he was in the race, and it was a project to get to the far bank; either ferry across upstream, or hike ~3 miles down from the swinging bridge.). That is a cool photo-hosting thing that is on this site now- thanks Justin.

Ya no doubt!! I have video of Ben Luck struggling with that 10'2" Prijon to make gate 2; he fought for gate one for like a minute, got it!; fought for gate 2 but blew by it; but then again, almost everyone struggled for gates one and two regardless of the boat they were in. The long boat was a great choice for the lower 3 race, but looked tough to handle on Jakes. One of the rules was that qualifiers from the lower 3 race had to use the same boat on Jakes (that doesn't really make sense now that I think about it; the pros are choosing a boat for Jakes, why not the amateurs?). That was Pat Keller in the RPM Max- he got endoed in Rock Drop, but still placed 6th (must have been his other run); only 1.01 seconds away from second place!

There was no boat length limit, but gates 1 and 2 definitely made sure that noone ran a Green Boat down Jakes :-)

The quadcopter video got me motivated to deal with the video editing chore (I've shot video for a year with that Canon Vixia, but I haven't put together an edited video recently :-). I need a good video editing program for Windows 7. I have .mts files, and Windows Movie Maker can't seem to deal with those. Any suggestions?
Just got around to getting the Jakes footage off the camera. I have some good stuff my friends Very Happy . I am trying to upload an unedited clip to Vimeo; is anyone familiar with these warnings?

Just a warning…
We have some recommendations for this video:
This video is in 1080p. By default we automatically convert large HD footage to 720p for better playback to other users. If you'd like to have it always playback in 1080p, there's an option for that.
It looks like this video is interlaced, which could result in a distorted looking video! To learn how to prevent this, click here.

I guess the Vimeo warnings don't really apply; left it at 720p, and it seems to play fine. Let me know how it looks. This is unedited, raw footage. (any positive feedback will help me stay motivated to post some more :-)
