new to the forum; new to kayaking

Post by yossarian on Sun 08 Jul 2012, 8:52 pm

Hi everybody,

This is my first post on the forum. I (along with a friend) have finally decided to get serious about kayaking after more than a decade of simply flirting with the idea. I have fooled around in kayaks some, even ran Henefer to Taggart once in a really old boat I got at a yard sale. I survived that one only by the grace of God. What this experience taught me is that I definitely don't have the skills to be running rivers yet, and I don't know any experienced kayakers around here. I would love to meet some people who can offer me some advice and maybe even allow me to tag along once I get the nerve. If anyone has advice or suggestions for how to progress to the next step, I would love to hear them. Thanks.

Welcome!
Crystal wave by the Walmart in Ogden is a good beginner spot (where are you located btw). There are folks down there every weekend; and most evenings. Do some eddy turns, practice some rolls. It gets a little crowded with kids on pool toys on weekend afternoons, but its still fun.
Cheers
Bill

If you don't know how to roll, you might take a kayak class. You'll learn basic kayaking skills including how to roll in a swimming pool. You will also be able to borrow their boats during the class so you won't have to buy equipment right away. There are links to the Utah Kayak School and Rapid Progression on this page. Also, the U of U has classes.

Utah kayak school is out of business. Rapid progression has many classes this season.

Thanks for all the responses so far. Already I have much more information than I did before. Jeff, I have already been planning to join. Flying Spaghetti Monster and Wasatch Bill, I have sent PMs, and will give you a call soon. I had been considering those kayak schools as well, but from their websites I couldn't tell if either was still in business, as most of the information looked a few years old. It's good to know that at least one of them is still an option. Does anyone here have any experience with Rapid Progression?

I took a class from Mark Greenwood @ Rapid progression. He was great I would definitely recommend him. Also does anyone know if UWC still doing Hen-Tag tuesdays and do you have to be a member to show up?

Mark Greenwood is no longer teaching with Rapid Progression. We still have great instructors that have a love for the sport, and are ACA certified. We can tailor a class to fit your needs.
