Close call in the Hen-Tag boulder garden?

Post by npackham on Tue 11 Jun 2013, 7:38 pm

Took a guy through the boulder garden today and he got stuffed upside down into an 18 inch slot between two large boulders on river right near the top of the boulder garden. He had a hard time reaching his grab loop but eventually was able to pull his loop and flushed free. I can't believe he fit through the slot and I was very relieved to see him come out the far side.
I obviously didn't prepare him for that encounter by giving him a warning about that slot. To me it is obvious from upstream that I wouldn't want to be anywhere near that thing but apparently beginners don't really recognize the danger there until it is too late. Does anybody else know the sieve I'm referring to? Any other close calls there?

I have also had a beginner do the exact same thing. She actually ended up getting the boat pinned for a few minutes

It isn't an underwater sieve, it is just two rocks sticking out of the water with a gap between.

I have seen several close calls at the boulder crack.  Luckily people easily fit.  I saw a larger lady getting stretchered into an ambulance there 3 weeks ago.  I have watched 2 other people with swim through there, 1 guy was with his SUP and did'nt fit.  He was slowly sinking under and  I jumped onto the boulder and grabbed his jacket 2.2 seconds after his head fully submerged.

Wow! Thats a fucked up deal. Hen Tag mostly seems a cruiser but I have seen that goal post in the river. Mind boggling how people could be sucked into that little spot. Vortex? I dunno. Been down it enough times now to realize not to ever take anything for granted but really? Getting sucked into that Sentinel could mean youre floating with fear as your companion ... Like a magnet to steel... Moth to the flame...Hope yer buds OK :-)

Being upset down pinned between two rocks in never fun. Happened to me in Joes Valley's Cottonwood Creek.
