Bear River Release Schedule

Post by charliev on Mon 24 Mar 2014, 8:18 am

Please spread the word, Black Canyon schedule this year is as follows:

  • April 5 & 6
  • April 12 & 13
  • April 25, 26 & 27 (White Water Festival weekend)
  • May 10 & 11

On scheduled days, flows of 900 cfs or inflow, whichever is greater, will be provided on each day.  Releases will begin at 10 a.m. and end at 4 p.m. Between adjoining release days, night-time flows of 200 cfs will be provided.

There is supposed to be a sign-up sheet at the put in this year, please sign it if it is there.  We have never found a good way of recording usage, and the number of paddlers maybe under reported.  More attendance makes continuing negotiations a little easier.

There is a big problem with cows in the riverbed just below the put-in, so expect to see a fence across the river with an obvious "gate" (white vertical slats) near the middle.  Please respect this necessary means to control cattle and their uncooperative owner.

The land owner on the right bank below the Turner highway bridge doesn't want people using his road as an escape road if you have trouble.  Please use an alternate route.

Sorry to the paddlers who prefer warmer weather paddling.  This year there is more water availability early and more importantly this is when we have had by far the best attendance in prior years.  Apparently there are too many other rivers flowing in May and June.

The Bear river is heavily infested with aquatic invasive species (particularly New Zealand mud snails), so please clean and disinfect your gear before paddling elsewhere.

Call or email if you have questions or comments.

Happy paddling,
Charlie Vincent

Who'll be at the Bear next weekend?

I'm over from the UK for the summer and I've got the next week or so free so I'm keen to get out kayaking.

I've no phone, but I plan on checking my email fairly regularly so send me a message on here on an email to guy[dot]genge[at]gmail[dot]com if you're keen to go kayaking. Smile

im going up 4/5 for the first release. if you want to give me a call and hatch out some details on rally times and logistics give me a call at 4844671682. i live in north ogden and would be rolling out of there prob around 8-9 to catch the bubble. the gates open at 10 and its about a two hour drive from Ogden. i figured the earlier we start the more time we have to scout if necessary of possible send a secant lap.

Cool, I'll see you there. I'm passing through Logan now, but will need to be in Driggs on Sunday evening so I don't think car pooling will work out sadly.
I'll be in either a blue Hyundai with BC plates, or an orange Remix - see you on the water.
