Main Salmon at High Water

Post by Mac the River Rat on Wed 16 Mar 2016, 2:01 pm

I'm looking at running the Main Salmon in June. Does anyone have any experience running the Main at high water? How sketchy is it a different flows?

I did it in June 2012 at 32,000 (Whitebird).  It was great - 7 1/2 days of easy paddling and hiking, Boundary Cr to Riggins.  The Main was fun and not sketchy at all - the major rapids were pretty much big wave trains.  We were cautious at Whiplash, staying far left, but it was a non-event.  It was fast - made for short days on the river, even with a lot of miles.  A friend paddled it in a sea kayak at higher flow (100k at Whitebird, 3 days Marsh Cr to Riggins!) and said Whiplash was terrifying and everything else was fine

Above 60k Chittum is followed quickly by Vinegar Both are class 4 at that level. If you go to Riggins Time Zone is another class 4, Whiplash is still a class 3 at those levels. Even at 100k it is still a 3 but tricky. Stay away from the right side cliffs.
The reason to watch for Elk Bar is the big wave train that leads into a hidden pourover hole that is occupying the center 2/3 of the river. Just be aware that it is there and pull off the wave train to run either side before the wave train ends.

I have run it numerous times at over 7ft on the ramp at Corn Creek.  Mostly it becomes big waves but nothing terribly challenging.  Most things are actually easier.  If over 7.5 on the ramp start thinking about Whiplash being something. Bailey will have some BIG waves.  Allison Ranch actually has some LARGE waves in the middle.  Five Mile gets pushy but just plan ahead on the cut and then stay off the river left entering Split Rock.  Dried Meat is fun big rollers and Chittam has a big old sneak on the right when over 7ft on the ramp.
