Any chance you will have any more of Swiftwater fundamental classes? I'm away with work for the only available one in May, but really need something like this. When is the other class that is sold out? Any chance of an opening for that?

Hey there,

There is the possibility we'll add another fundamentals course to the schedule if there's enough interest. We are also happy to arrange a specific course for groups of 5 or more. Get a group of boating friends together!

Swiftwater rescue is the best money you can spend. If you can learn to save your life, and your buddies lives that beats the best gear on the market.

It's great to see such a desire for training!

We still have spots available in our course on May 5-6. Saturday evening and all day Sunday.

Seems like there's enough interest to add another fundamentals course to the schedule. I'll post back to this thread once I've looked at the calendar and checked with instructors.

Do you need the Fundamentals certification before getting the Technician certification? Or could one just do the Technician course?

Ah, glad you brought that up. Still spots open in the Technician-level course April 27-29. 3 full days in the water.

Prerequisites for the Technician level course are only basic swimming ability and some river experience.

looks like we almost have enough for a group of 5. Would we be able to pick the days for the class? would it be the 3 days on the water? I would love to get some good training this year I am sure some other friends would sign up as well.

Matt, could you tell us the major differences between the Fundamentals and the Technician course besides $260. Everybody on here has a good amount of river experience and hopefully good swimming abilities.

I don't mind a little bit of classroom training on the fundamentals behind everything, but definitely am much more of a hands-on kind of learner.

And who will be teaching these classes? Local boaters that any of us have heard of?

Thanks for any info - Wil

I would definitely be in. I've wanted to do a course for a while now. More than likely my brother Chad would also join in if there is room

Hey all,

I'll try to lay out the differences between the two levels of Swiftwater Rescue we have on the schedule right now.

The Fundamentals course is one classroom session of about 3 hours. We cover rescue philosophy, gear, etc. The full day is spent entirely at the river practicing skills. We introduce skills and practice through them pretty rapidly. The course is designed as a great intro or would make a really great refresher for people with some experience. I should repeatthat the field day is spent entirely at the river.

The Technician level course does have a small bit of 'classroom' time built in that would most likely be done out on location. We do introduce a few skills not covered in Fundamentals, but our main purpose is to go into more depth into everything and have more time for repetition of skills. One of our goals at RRT is to provide scenario-based training. The 3-day course allows for more time to practice rescue scenarios as a whole, rather than the individual skills practice provided by the Fundamentals.

Hope this helps clear things up. Let me know if I can answer any more questions!

Oh, forgot to mention instructors.

I will be teaching the Fundamentals course on May 5-6. Myself or another instructor, Andy Rich would be teaching another Fundamentals if we add it.

The Technician class will most likely be taught by both of us.

Is a Wilderness First Aid or higher certification required for The Technician class? It say it is on your site.

One last question...

One of the reasons I would be wanting to get a cert of this sort is for future jobs I may come across (also my personal knowledge). I know many places want their employers to have a ACA cert. in whitewater rescue. Are your classes ACA certified? Is could be a huge factor on using UofU vs others....
