Spring Breakin

Post by Craig.Bilderback on Tue 22 Feb 2011, 2:17 am

Hello Utah boaters!
I just moved to SLC from Kentucky. I have been enjoying the snowboarding, but really drooling over the torrent that shall be released once the snowpack is exposed to some warm weather. I am exited I found UT rivers, as I have no boating acquaintances in Utah, and LOVE kayaking.

My question is about some early season goodies. My lady is headed out in mid-march for her spring break, and as much as we love snowboarding we are itching to get on the river. I'm a strong enough boater (ACA Level 4 SWR instructor and ACA Level 4 Whitewater Kayak Instructor)...but she is a beginner/intermediate without a drysuit. So I worry about cold swims for her. Was thinking about pushing some rented rubber, but have no experience with oaring. Any suggestions? Would love 2 or 3 nights out, but are up for day runs too. (And realize I'm screwed making multi-day plans so late with the permit situation out here). Also we are down to drive quite a ways for some liquid. Commercial trips (The salt in AZ) are probably out of budget.

Thanks everyone! I look forward to seeing everyone on the river!

Westwater is a good III+ run that will be flowing mid-March (it's flowing now). You can find a description here. Even if she didn't feel up to kayaking Westwater, she (or the two of you) could ducky it. I ran it in late October in a kayak and two in our party we're sharing a ducky. I'd recommend she borrow a dry suit if you guys go that route, though.

another good place to meet good people to go with is the Utah White Water Club.. Check out the UWC club page for listings of all the events this summer!
