AF rapids change

Post by Guest on Mon 28 Mar 2011, 10:33 am

Just in case anyone cares: I biked up the canyon the other day and took a good look at some of the drops. High water last year changed almost every rapid on the river. Goat Boof is a right run now (left side is high and dry). Squiggles will be interesting with a back-cut horseshoe hole at the exit. The bottom of Exploder has a seive/undercut on RR (the slab that fell in a few years back shifted into the riverbed and has a 2+ foot cave/tunnel under it) with a overhang/undercut boulder directly RL with very little space (3-4 ft) between (congested with a large triangle rock backed up with 2 piton rocks directly below) to make the exit, and the likely route will push right into the RL bottom overhang/undercut boulder. The entrance boulder RL in Boneyard rolled and the run should still be quite do-able, but hard paddling to the right will be needed to make the run. The entrance to Carnage Corner has changed and a lot of the flow now goes RL spitting around the boof boulder. The landing looks ok, but a boof would be key. Carcass Cascase is completey different and will be basically a new rapid. The avalanche chute leading into Carcass Cascade has brought in a lot of wood which will likely end up downstream once high water hits. The run overall has very little wood in it still. 180+% snow water equivalent snowpack so far for this year on Timp Divide, so it will be an interesting year on the AF for those who are inclined.

Where is Carcass Cascade? New avi wood from this winter? Man, it never ends. Work party before high water perhaps?
"The run overall has very little wood in it still." Incredible. I suppose that is "relatively speaking" ;-)

The wood in the lower section isn't too bad. There is always work to be done though... lots of wood above the park run.
Carcass Cascade is the section right after the river goes under the road right below the Timp park gates.
If anyone wants to go out and "look" at the river let me know. I really need to get out on the water! Maybe Ogden this weekend? Any Utah County folks want to drive up?
