Zion Narrows or Zion Park Sunday

Post by huckfin on Fri 01 Apr 2011, 3:56 am

Climbing Black & Tan right outside of St. George on Saturday April 2ed with a climbing club. I'd like to get a permit and paddle the narrows or the park on sunday depending on levels. Snow pack is at 180% and forecast of 85 deg weather.
Planning on leaving early Saturday morning. Ride with and climb or chill or meet me down there to paddle? Any takers?

Zion is at a great level right now. Also holding below 650 at night so this may be the perfect time to get on it if they stick to the 650 rule. Hard to leave Narrows, Eggs and Riverdale all at perfect flows, but Zion is definitely prime.

I'm currently making phone calls... will know in a little bit, but all indications point to the road being impassable due to a few feet of snow in the last half-dozen miles of NF road. It may be melted in a week, but then the road probably becomes even less navigable, what with mud and all.

I will re-post as soon as I find out. One more minor correction: I believe that permits are restricted to flows under 600 cfs for a 24-hour period previous to permit issuance.

The verdict from everyone: "Don't even think about it."

Most people are predicting that it won't be passable in about a month. If Kane County decides to grade the road, then it might be a little sooner. But with the snow, melting snow (combined with gypsum), it is not a question of FWD... it's simply impassable.

I'm as bummed as anyone else.

I have not run any of these sections yet. Does the road issue mean that both the zion park section and the narrows sections are a no go?

That's immediately what I thought, too. I asked about snowmobile access. But it's not just a snow problem. Supposedly there will be areas where there will not be snow, and then mud becomes the problem. I'm pretty sure that we're talking ~20 miles to get to the put-in. Then you've got to wonder whether you'll be hiking for hours in the snow, as well, once you "put in," at Chamberlain.

That being said, I'd love to see a trip report for someone trying to get in there.

Hiking shouldn't be a problem, just stay high and dry. Mud around those parts is really a huge hold back. Your boat will gain 40 pounds of mud, saying you drag it. Your shoes will become 10 pound each. Just stick to where the sun gets to a lot and high on hills. A tarp became my best friend for awhile when I was going down there alot after the heavy floods. My truck interior now has a permanent red hue to it...

In other words, I wouldn't even try....

Zions Narrows> If we can get a group together sunday would be great. I read a ducky is wise to have in the group. I have a self bailer 2 man ducky and one person to ride in the ducky. Guess there is a rule that you have to put on by 6 am.
Lets make it happen. You interested Newty?

John. Hit up the park run(like Joe's bu red). The previous basically says the narrows are a no go for a while.

The Narrows is near the top of the list for me. Once to road melts off enough, the water level will probably be huge. With the floods earlier and near record snowpack, I'm thinking wood movement. Let's keep each other informed of any info coming out of that little chasm.
