Little G.C. of the San Rafael beta?

Post by Phil U. on Wed 27 Apr 2011, 9:25 am

Hey. Getting off the San Juan this coming Monday and looking to float the Little Grand Canyon of the San Rafael with my non ww paddling wife. Me in my hard shell and her in a duck. The gauge has been hanging just below 200. Has anyone floated it at less than this? Is there that much in there or could there already be diversions reducing that flow?Anybody know of a shuttle service that would service that run? Any info would be great. Thanks,

Phil Urban, BV, CO.

Not sure of any of your questions, but I'd be surprised if any water was being removed. Too much water on the ground already for the farmers.

I've only run it at high water but the stream is so narrow that I'd be surprised if there is a problem at 200 cfs. I don't think much water gets taken out until the weather gets hot.

We just floated it in 2 days at 200 and it was fine level for it. Since its Class 1 I guess it really does'nt matter. Very scenic trip, cool hikes, great camping, petroglyphs and we did'nt see another person. Pretty much the best 2 day flatwater trip in the US. If you like flatwater.

We floated it in Ducks, took off Sunday. 150 when we put on and dropped to 137 while we were in there. Definitely low but managed to follow the water without having to drag the boats. Beautiful section, great run to intro the wife to self support boating.
