Looking for first hand beta on Timpoweap Canyon

Post by Cutch on Fri 29 Apr 2011, 9:59 am

Can anyone tell me what Timpoweap Canyon is like at current flows (1200+)? Most importantly, how well can you scout and move around the canyon at these larger flows? I guess what I'm asking is what is the highest that you have run it and what did you think of the run at those levels?

Considering heading down there tonight. Any beta would be appreciated. Thanks!

Kyle

High water is fun

Post by Guest on Fri 29 Apr 2011, 10:17 am

It was somewhere in the vincinity of 2000 cfs when I did it in April 2005. I would highly recommend the run.
A few things to keep in mind are:
-First big hazard: Quail Creek Diversion Dam. The gates can open without notice creating a potentially very dangerous/deadly trap, see description http://www.eddyflower.com/RunDetailstabs.aspx?RunId=431#/home
-Second hazards: Sieve's. There are a few in the rapids, and likely others elsewhere not visible.
-Third Hazard: Sharp angular rock. It is limestone, so this should be expected.
-Forth Hazard: Diversion Dam in the run. Can be portaged or run on the right.
Now that you're scared...it is a fun run with some really good rapids that can be scouted and portaged, so there's always a chance to walk if you choose. It is beautiful and it is kinda a cool place.
We portaged Quail Creek Dam, one rockpile and sieve near the beginning and one short drop near the middle below the double falls. We ran everything else using safety at the more stout drops.

I'd recommend you also hit up the Zion Park Run. This was super fun at high water.
The drops are a little pushy with some large waves, but I don't recall anything too frightening.

Thanks Daniel! I've run Timpoweap at 550 and had a great time. Wasn't sure if it was a good back up plan if the zion narrows is too high to get a permit, and it sounds like its great at higher flows.

...and check out Ash Creek if you head down that way

That is a fun run that is worth doing if it is running.
