Celestial Gorge

Post by brightonb on Tue 10 May 2011, 1:25 pm

Sixth
Water is running at 129 currently. Some have expressed interest in
running Celestial Gorge Wednesday afternoon. Who knows if we will get
this kind of flow again for decades. Any interest?

Gates are closed still.

Post by afaust on Tue 10 May 2011, 4:34 pm

Went up there today with a couple of people. The gates are still closed to get to the celestial gorge put in. If you don't mind hiking or dragging you can get up there still. We were too lazy and pressed for time to make the hike up there.

Fifth water after the confluence of fifth and sixth water creeks along the three forks trail heading to the hot pots looked juicy and good with just a couple must make wood portages. Might be worth dragging your boat up to put in at the bridge halfway up the three forks trail. Lots of bouldery fun.

I have been hiking, camping, hunting and fishing in Diamond fork and the surrounding canyons since I was 7 and I can't remember ever seeing the water this high.

I might be able to head up there and make the hike to the put in tomorrow, work permitting. Scotticus's photos make the run look very tempting. What time in the afternoon?

Scotticus said it's a 10 mile hike, plus a fair bit of scouting. Sounds like an all day affair. Not tomorrow.

For those interested in more remote creeks, it deserves mentioning that "Lower 6th water" is a worthy 1.2 mile boat hike, starting at the 3 Forks trailhead on Diamond fork road; scout as you go; I am surprised/psyched there are still no wood portages in this section (as of last Saturday anyway). Cross the 5th water bridge after 1 mile, and continue up 6th water another .2 miles, to just below the riverwide boulder sieve, and scout that portage if you are considering a future Celestial gorge run (Lower 6th is the bottom of Celestial gorge). Locals have put epic amounts of work into lower 6th over the past few years; it would be great if it gets some traffic.

Could continue down Diamond Fork too.
