Yampa at record highs

Post by Ron on Mon 16 May 2011, 1:00 am

Anyone got any idea what the Yampa from Deerlodge will be like in early June. The weather guys predict historic high flows June 8 and 9. Our permit is for the 7th. Been 20+ years since I've had a permit and know it's a hoot at 12,000 or so. Wonder if it washes out (ie. major rapids dissapear and big waves where there wasn't anything before). I think Whirlpool will have whirlpools (duh) but Split Mt. will be big. Anyone got some beta that'll help us prepare?

I guide for OARS on Lodore and the Yampa. You got it right. Most of the Yampa rapids will wash out, Little Joe will be big waves , Split will. be huge.. The real big one will be Warm Springs. I am a read and run kind of guy even on the MF Salmon at 7-8 feet, but this worthy of a scout.. Warm Springs hole is at the bottom of a wave train. There is probably a pillow around the hole that pushes you away but it is kind of soft and you could go through it. A ballsy left run is possible at high flows also. Watch out for surprise hole just downstream river right.
