Class II-III recommendations near Salt Lake?

Post by armstrongkd on Sat 21 May 2011, 1:10 pm

I'm pretty new to kayaking and I'm looking for some recommendations of places to kayak near the Salt Lake area in the class II-III range.

Last year I purchased a two man inflatable kayak and took it with a buddy down the Provo River on the stretch between the dam and Vivian park a half dozen times or so.

I'm familiar with that section of the river because I'd done it on an inner tube before but now I'd like to try something new. I'm looking for something that's not too challenging but at the same time not completely boring.

Any recommendations?

The Weber between Henefer and Taggarts sounds like it would be a good run for you. It will definately be less boring than the stretch of the Provo you have been running. The rock garden can be challenging your first time and will have bigger waves but will be less technical and easier overall right now while the water is running high. I would suggest running it with somebody your first time. There should be plenty of people up there this weekend.
