Guess three guys in a raft ended up swimming after getting a stick through the raft and sinking. Chick from mayors office who was on radio was beside herself in worry as "it could have been much worse!". I hate politicians who believe it is their duty to save people from themselves.

or maybe
"When kayaking is outlawed, only criminals will have kayaks"

Anyone good at making t-shirt designs?

It was on ksl radio today. Obviously he thinks so and his office threw out a nice threat that getting in or getting too close will result in a ticket. He should close down main street because of the history of accidents. Think of the children!

Re: Illegal to boat Logan river

I see its over flood stage.
Logan levels:
Bankful is 4.7 feet.
1,250 06-13-2011 00:00 MDT, 4.88 feet.
Flood level is 5.0 feet.
1,390 06-15-2011 23:00 MDT, 5.04 feet
Edit:

1,560 06-16-2011 08:00 MDT, 5.22 feet
1,550 06-16-2011 09:00 MDT, 5.21 feet. Leveled off.
1,540 06-16-2011 11:00 MDT, 5.20 feet.
1,530 06-16-2011 13:00 MDT, 5.19 feet.
===
The upper Logan was epic enough for me at 1250-1300! 1400+ would be interesting; some more brush should be pruned actually. There were two new logs as of 6/12; one in the start of the meanders after passing under the road, to the "wilderness" section, easily slide-over-able on the right, near where that old log jam was a couple years ago. The other log is more serious, .8 miles above that low bridge if I recall correctly; stop at the pullout and bushwhack 10 feet to see it; passable hard right, tight to the bushes in a two foot wide slot. A must make move..

Red Banks has a few IV- moves at 1300, this would be super quality at 1400. This is the cleanest run right now; and the "Red Banks, upper mile" is all road scoutable; also IV-.
Woodcamp was class IV for a hundred yards in St Annes @1300 (with brush falling in on the left, passable on the hard right, in the leadin to St Annes; bank scouting suggested). Worth getting on, however, be forewarned that below St Annes, above Card takout, are 3 mandatory roll bridges, and a bit more brush. Would be worth finding a takeout above the low bridges. If going all the way to 3rd dam, there are 3 more tight limbo bridges; scraped my helmet on two of them; those would be rolls at 1400.
Has anyone been doing Staircase at 1300-1400? There is one for you Nick!

Put on any of these in the early am; there is noone there but the beavers, deer, a porcupine, a badger, songbirds, kingfishers, dippers, a moose..
Not to mention that- Steep Canyon has some water in it. The lower couple miles looked like shallow creeking with some wood avoidance; very doable; not unlike the "Red Banks upper mile".
Arguably a different river (its "Steep Canyon", not "the Logan" :-), with only a few hundred cfs up that high; and very secluded, with extensive free camping.
sunny

Re: Illegal to boat Logan river

Post by Alan Clark on Thu 16 Jun 2011, 8:31 am

Mr Mayor,

I am disappointed to hear the news that the Logan River
has been declared a disaster area and that recreational use has been
prohibited. I am a kayaker in the area and love to paddle the Logan
River whenever possible. Being that the Logan River is a navigable
water way, I find it offensive that it be declared a disaster area and
boating is prohibited. I do understand that the river is above flood
stage, but recreationalists should be able to make their own choices on
public water ways.

Instead of closures, I urge you to post
warning signs that the river is dangerous, that rescue may not be
available and to enter at your own risk. These postings would allow
competent boaters to still use the river and hinder the launching onto
the river by novice or people not knowing what they are doing.

One
example I could give you is Cataract Canyon on the Colorado River. The
river is expected to be at flows higher than ever run before, so
outfitters are taking extra precautions, warning guests, etc. However,
boats are still allowed on the river.

Sincerely,

Alan Clark

Logan City website:

EXECUTIVE ORDER 11-02

EVACUATION ORDER

PURSUANT TO DECLARED LOCAL EMERGENCY

Effective as of the date of this Executive Order, the area known as The Logan River and the banks of said river located in the municipal limits of the City of Logan are hereby declared a disaster area and occupancy, ingress and egress, including any recreational uses thereon are prohibited by all citizens other than authorized emergency personnel. This evacuation order is made pursuant to the authority granted in U.C.A . 63K-4-202

This is just the city limits. Although I would like to do the town run sometime. Anywhere up in the canyon is still good to go.

Re: Illegal to boat Logan river

I have been trying to find a kayaking partner for the Logan for the past month- if this ban generates some more interest in boating up there, then I am all for it!!! alien
BTW, the Logan crew I paddled the upper Logan with last Sunday regularly paddle Staircase; if I recall correctly some of them have been on Staircase up to 1000, but not higher. They LOVE the upper Logan above 1000; one said that the upper Logan @1300 was "the most fun she had ever had on the Logan" :-). I would call the upper Logan IV+ in the Monolith @1300, with a few miles of IV, and now its 1550 (we did have a swimmer in the Monolith, and he was fine; got out right, under the road bridge).

There will be a new level of brush to contend with, at new high levels.

I'm from logan, and some buddies did staircase today. So yes... just the town section's closed... but, you don't want to do that now anyway.... The footbridge is super huge and a hairy river wide hole-with a tricky portage. V wave is do-able, but still big and sticky. Red banks, bridger and staircase are still EPIC right now, and will be for weeks. And yes, towards the bottom of staircase the bushes get tricky, but almost the ENTIRE staircase section is scoutable from both sides of the river. To top that... yesterday logan hit a new record... almost 1600!!! The whole river below 3rd dam is running that (more or less) because all the dams are full.

By the way, for those of you who have yet to try the logan, you're missing out. At normal river levels... there's a section for every level boater. Enjoy it while it's good, and be safe!
