Payette Soiree

Post by Lonny Selin on Fri 15 Jul 2011, 4:45 am

Payette Soiree

The Utah Whitewater Clubs Annual Payette Weekend is the
weekend of the 24th of July.
Traditionally this weekend is scheduled around July 24th to
take advantage of the Utah
holiday. The 24th falls on
Monday this year the board and members polled wanted to include it even though
some people do not get to observe the holiday.

There have been some changes and what you may find on the
club website calendar is not correct:

First: We didn’t get the biggest group site
(#1) at Hot Springs Campground. It was
already scheduled to overlap our dates.
So we have the (#2) group site adjacent to it. Just want to alert everyone so they don’t
step on other campers’ toes. Site #2 is
right behind the restroom. There still
should be plenty of room.

Second:
The nights we have paid for are Friday and Saturday nights. I understand that there are people who want
to show up earlier and those who want to stay later. In the past, the campground host has been
very cooperative with people who are very cooperative (and vice versa). If the group site we have is not scheduled by
someone else on adjacent nights, we have been able to pay the regular camping
fee, each, and still utilize the group site without having to move. Comprende’ It may all be in your approach. Currently, the adjacent nights are not
scheduled.

If you are planning to attend, and if you are planning to be
there on those extra nights, it could be very helpful if you were to call or
email your planned attendance and number of people. We might be able to organize and work
something out that is beneficial to most.
For this purpose, you can call me or text me at 801-913-4341 or email me
at llselin@msn.com If things go as planned, I…We will be going
up early and coming back Monday.

Third:
We are a little shorter on funds this year due to some unplanned
obligations and we are not planning to provide anything for a camp dinner. However, if you would like to participate in
a pot-luck dinner Saturday night, then plan for it accordingly and try to
impress everyone with your culinary skills or your imagination. Remember, you will be hungry after all day on
the river. It will be fun.

Fourth:
IDISA – The Idaho
Invasive Species Act.

This is the third year since Idaho adopted this policy and required
stickers for motorized and non-motorized water craft. The only exempts are inflatable boats under
ten feet. Stickers must be attached to
the boat. Order online at $7.00 each http://parksandrecreation.idaho.gov/stickerpurchase.aspx

If your stickers have not arrived be sure to bring the
online printed receipt. Or, you are
supposed to be able to purchase them at any Idaho State Park and or I have a
short list of vendors or agencies where you can purchase them in the Boise area
and…. including one in Tremonton, UT (Ken’s Market).

Did you know that both Utah
and Wyoming
now have similar laws and regs? Wyoming - $15.00
stickers. Utah does not have stickers but does have
some very strict laws, rules and fines.

Fifth:
All water levels have been running high this year and late into the
summer. Here is what I have heard so
far. They have called off two out of
three races on the Payettes for this weekend due to high water. The water levels are coming down. South Fork levels are up. Cabarton is higher water than usual but
opinion has it, it is not too different, maybe some features are a little
washed out. Howard’s is washed (ha
ha). The one race to take place this
weekend is the Main… Banks to Beehive. I could not find out how or if the new play
park is affected. By the way, for those
who didn’t know, there is a new play park in the town of Cascade, north of Cabarton Rd. where the Cabarton put-in
is. Fun and worth a visit.

Please bring your ACA numbers. Non-members are welcome and will be required
to sign a waiver with $5.00.

The south fork is down since the forth. The Canyon run should be good to go now that the portage isn't flooded. Thinking of heading up that way. Canyon, Staircase, and East Fork of the South Fork Salmon are on my list and others are welcome. PM me. Hopefully I can catch a run with you guys.

I hope I can get up there. Justin, you want to do the South Salmon Goat Lick run if you go to that area. It's that good.

Heading up Friday morning, anybody up for an Friday evening run? Like the Swirly Canyon run? This will be my first Payette's boating trip, I'm assuming there might be a some folks there Friday?
Also, my wish-list for this trip includes the Cabarton run, Main Payette and Staircase (possibly hitting Kelly's Sunday morning before the drive home) Any soiree veterans think this itinerary's possible?

Is anyone leaving Friday evening and coming back on Monday? I would love to find someone to split gas with but I can't leave until 5pm on Friday from SLC.

Todd, I believe it's called hotsprings campground. When coming from Boise, turn right at you cross over the SF Payette and head up along the river right side of the SF for 12 miles or so. You'll pass a gas station on the left then a ranger station on the right. About a mile further there will be a curve to the left and the campground on the left. Enter campground and you'll see the group spots just to your left. The campground is hard to miss in daylight, easy to miss at night. If that's all Greek to you, call me and I'll see if I can explain it better.

I'll be heAding up Thursday, leaving Ogden around 4:30, coming back Sunday morning. I have space for one person if someone wants to split gas.
