Riverdale Wave needs YOUR help ASAP!!!!

Post by Jeff Young on Thu 28 Jul 2011, 10:40 pm

I spoke with Crystal Young today about the status of the Riverdale Wave and the city's intention on fixing it. Seems they are getting money from an insurance claim from the damage caused by the high water to fix the trail and other things. She asked that I get the word out that we need people to contact the city and state your interest in seeing a portion of that money used to recreate/fix the highly popular Riverdale Wave. They mentioned that they have been getting some emails about the wave, but now is the time to launch a coordinated effort to make them understand that we need the wave back

Here is the contact info-

email to Lynn Moulding, Public Works Administrator
lmoulding@rc.utah.gov

I am contacting you to request that you use whatever resources
available to the city, especially those available to repair any
high-water damage from this season, to make repairs to the Riverdale
wave .

I kayak the area now and again, and many of my friends are
at that wave every week. These people are the the type that
give their time to help new people learn the sport of whitewater
kayaking, including youth. In addition, many raise money
annually for a kayak camp for cancer survivors.

Please let me know if you are the best person I should be contacting
concerning this matter or if there is someone else more directly
involved.

Thank you for your time,
Diane Stilwell

I emailed them (public works, cc the mayor, and the general info address) and got a polite reply from the city administrator, on the same day.
I've been meaning to go over there and look at the wave. Has anyone determined if its just filled up with sediment+rocks, or if the concrete structure is damaged/collapsed? Dredging would be a fairly simple fix, whereas (I assume) diverting the river and rebuilding the feature would be quite a bit more money.
The reply I got said:
"Bill, the city is in the process of assessing flooding damages and restoration for many areas along the river. The Kayak feature will also be assessed and given consideration."

At 700cfs, I couldn't see the concrete ledge that is normally visible, but I could see rocks on each side leading out to the tongue. Not sure yet what happened.
