Ogden River Park Dedication Update from original post

Post by Lonny Selin on Mon 03 Oct 2011, 3:04 pm

I Have some new and revised information from Crystal. If you have been reading or following the event topic, please read this for some new times, numbers and dates and contact persons.

"Clean-up: Tuesday Oct 4th at 5pm.
Meet at Brigham Cycles Parking lot; 19th and Washington. Bring large pruners to
help clean out vegetation between Kiesel
Bridge and the Wave
behind Wal-Mart. Also bring gloves to help pick up trash in the eddies and at
the wave. I think we can float from Kiesel to the wave and have pruners
and trash bags in our boats. The reach is class II. It will take
about 2hrs to run shuttle, paddle and clean. Depending on how much time
we spend at the wave. "

"Oct 7th: I am looking for about
10 volunteers to help guide people down the river. Volunteers should sign
up at info@ogdenriver.org; or call Jennifer at 801-629-8607. Please state that
you will volunteer to be a River Guide. Volunteer River
Guides will check-in at Childs Ave
and the River to sign waivers at around noon; lunch will be provided."

Please read and adhere to this update rather than the details I provided on Friday. Your interest and efforts are appreciated even if you are not able to participate in everything. Please help keep these activities organized.

Here is info I have, its mostly what Lonny posted with just a little extra. If I hear anything more about the release I'll post it.

Clean-up: Tuesday Oct 4th at 5pm. Meet at Brigham Cycles Parking lot; 19th and Washington. Bring large pruners to help clean out vegetation between Kiesel Bridge and the Wave behind Wal-Mart. Also bring gloves to help pick up trash in the eddies and at the wave. I think we can float from Kiesel to the wave and have pruners and trash bags in our boats. The reach is class II. It will take about 2hrs to run shuttle, paddle and clean. Depending on how much time we spend at the wave.

Oct 7th: I am looking for about 10+ volunteers to help guide people down the river. Volunteers should sign up at info@ogdenriver.org; or call Jennifer at 801-629-8607. Please state that you will volunteer to be a River Guide. Volunteer River Guides will check-in at Childs Ave and the River to sign waivers at around noon; lunch will be provided.

All Seasons Adventures, Weber State Outdoor Program and Wasatch Touring will loan duckies, SUPs, and tubes. I have no idea how many people will want to tour the river (guessing about 70ish). Right now have 15 duckies, 4 small rafts/tubes, and 3 SUPs. Slackwater Brew Pub will provide shuttle. River Guides should expect to paddle the run about 2 times and help with safety at the wave, and loading boats for shuttle. We will be taking 8th-10th grade students and members from the EPA, DEQ, USACE, ect. River tours will be from about 1pm-4:30pm. Reception with free food and music for everyone will be at the wave from 4pm-6pm.

If people can't make it to be a River Guide I hope to get as many people down there as possible between 4pm-6pm to give Ogden City and partners and big Thanks for supporting the whitewater community and to enjoy the music and food.

Water update- 250cfs through the canyon is being requested from 9am until 430pm. It takes about an hour for the canyon to completely dewater after its shut off at the top. This equates to about 350cfs at Crystal wave.

Update- she requested 350cfs in canyon. Lots of water in there yesterday from the rain when we were working on the wood.

and by the way, "that part on the Rainboaw Gardens sections that sucks because of vegetation" (aka the three island by the USU park/gardens) is now good to go on the left side; along with some other pruning I did this evening-

You guys figure out a time and I'll try to make that. Depends when I get off work and I have no idea at this point when that would be. If I miss you guys I might catch up or just run it solo again

Deal. Let's meet at the Narrows takeout at 11am. I'd like to get a lap or three on just the Narrows before running the whole shebang.

Good job Brian. I went to bend down that piece of rebar below Wall Ave, center right, but didn't see it this evening. Did one of you guys get to that?

I'll try to catch a Narrows lap around 11:30, after a test I have to take (bad timing). If anyone wants to shuttle from the Walmart lot around 11:30, and put in for the Narrows down, thats what I have in mind.

Yeah I never saw that rebar either, Bill, so I moved on to those other parts.

Anyone up for a later waterfall section->down run? Work has me till about 4, so if anyone wants to catch the last bit of water with me, that'd be great. Or at least be available at the bottom for a shuttle... poor me, I know.

Looks like I just missed it. fml Crying or Very sad

The turnout was excellent. Tons of people volunteering on shore with the landscaping and we had a bunch of people we escorted down the river. Quite a few boaters showed to help out too.

It was an eye-opening experience for me, to guide kids who have never paddled before down a short class II- section of the Weber, from Grant ave to the "crystal" wave by the Wall Ave Walmart. Evidently the adults thought better of it in the cold; I did not see any adults (other than local paddler guides) or high school kids (my understanding was it would be adults from the EPA and other agencies, and high school kids, floating down).
This was far, far more difficult for novices than I expected. I was wishing we could start them on a lake, but it worked out fine. If there is another "novice paddle" event on that stretch, we should really prune it out thoroughly (if anyone would like to help work on that, please PM me, or email). Virtually every branch that could be hit, was hit. There is one bridge pier that is the primary broach hazard, but we managed to keep the kids off of it. We had about a 5 kids to 2 guides ratio, but 1 to 1 would work better if they can't steer at all; then you can nudge them away from the bushes. This is a good SUP stretch btw; would help to prune it out higher, for SUPs. Thanks to Wasatch Touring for bringing some demo SUPs. While I did not get upstream of Grant Ave for this release, a SUP run was a good challenge.

The catered shin-dig by the wave was excellent. Roosters and Slackwater provided excellent food, and Slackwater organized a big tent, with two heaters, and another tent on the north side with a guitarist complete with a generator (no generator noise tho), with a small PA, amplified acoustic guitar and miked vocals. If you haven't been to Slackwater Pub and Pizzeria yet, they are right on the river at Washington, in the same building as the bike shop. They have the most extensive selection of real beers I have seen in Utah. Good people; stop in and see them. They have been having live music outside every Fri and Sat; weather permitting they might have a few more performances.
The day before there was a huge mud puddle on the trail to the wave, and I was wondering how it was going to work. That morning road base was put down, and green outdoor carpets over that, for a virtually mud-free approach.
Weber State donated inflatables, All Season Adventures donated boats and shuttle; I'm sure there were many other groups I've forgotten to mention. I heard there were something like 24 work areas, for the volunteer planting and weeding. Very impressive how it all came together.

Thanks for the update, Bill. Sounds like a pretty descent turnout considering the weather and the temperature. Lots of support and participation. I would like to have been there...just sidetracked by some minor truck details (brakes).
