Wilderness designation on Deso and WW?

Post by DanCan on Mon 14 Nov 2011, 1:51 pm

I posted this over on Mountainbuzz, but I think some of you don't frequent that site so I want your take on this...

So I have been away from the news for 4 or 5 days... a good thing in general. But I noticed that the Government released a proposed list of wilderness areas and West Water Canyon and Desolation was on it.

I don't want to start a Wilderness debate. I'm just curious how a Wilderness designation for say West Water would change it for those of us that like to float it. Seems already pretty much managed that way. Would there be changes?

There won't be much change in Westwater or Deso for boaters. In Westwater, the only change would be no motors in the main part of the canyon. The flatwater at the top and bottom would be outside the Wilderness and motors would be OK there. In Deso, even less change would be noticable. The areas where they want to drill for natural gas would be outside the Wilderness area.
