Ogden Narrows new concrete sieve/pin problem

Post by Jeff Young on Mon 05 Dec 2011, 3:39 pm

Wasatchbill let me know about ten concrete road barriers that were pushed into the riverbed, at the Gnar section of the narrows, creating some real safety issues. I'm working with the city to get this resolved but if the water gets turned on for some strange reason.....like a res with a lot of water... You need to take this into consideration. The concrete creates some nasty pin potential with an area forming a nasty sieve.

I'll update everyone when it gets resolved

Thanks for working on this Jeff!
There are a few other hazards in this photo album that I saw yesterday too.
I am particularly curious who owns the concrete wall that is about to fall in the river, above a bridge in the Pineview section.

I guess the good news is that I did not see loads of new trees down in the river, as I was expecting. There is one down above the Pineview putin, and one above the bridge immediately above the Smokey Bear sign. I have not looked at most of Rainbow Gardens, or the Weber for that matter, since the wind storm.

Update- this issue was caused by a few 18 wheelers that thought it would be smart to take the canyon rd. They couldn't negotiate some of the turns, shutting down that road for quite some time. The barriers were pushed over to get the trucks through and some were not put back. I'm working with Ogden city, weber co and UDOT to get it corrected asap.

UDOT will close the canyon tomorrow from 9am till noon to get their crap out of the riverbed. If anyone gets up there before I do to see if the problem is resolved, and if it isnt', let me know so I can follow up on it. Thanks

Wow, what the? It looks like they replaced the fallen ones before getting the old ones out. Thats not a good sign. $20 says... they don't get them all tomorrow. That sure would be sad. If I wasnt working in logan tomorrow, I would be there for sure. I hope someone else can.

Also, I'd bet money that wall comes down before June.

Sounds like the Ogden needs some more work.........?

Jeff, one point I'd like to make to whoever the right people are (UDOT? Ogden?) is that the river wall seriously needs some mortar work in a few spots, preferably before another high water spring, or some parts of that river wall could collapse, affecting the road (and dumping more sharp rocks in the river).
I guess I'll work on getting some photos; seems to help.

Dave, Try to be positive. I'm glad they are doing what they are doing. Bill, their engineers are going to look at the road and go from there. Don't think pics from us are going to do anything ref those issues. The concrete wall on the brink of falling in is a private property related issue (I believe) so having the landowner contacted by the govt agency responsible for that area is the way to go. I'll make a note about it, one problem at a time.

Radio just announced the road closure in the canyon. Thats a good sign.

Yeah I do man, yes I do.

But, I'm sure you understand man... stuff like that is just flat-out disheartening to see. But either way... I'm am impressed. Especially for a State funded deal. Props to U-dot or whoever came after all. And props to you too Jeff, for getting on it - like Bonnit. Smile

I'll come up in spring, and buy ya suds and grub after you take me down eggs. Sound good?

Buy me two, so I can give one to Wasatchbill. He's the one who found this and man I think he's part beaver with all the wood he cuts out for everyone.
