New thread for the "Suicide Wave"

Post by brianteats on Mon 12 Dec 2011, 5:20 pm

Left side looks playable, with eddy service, and the waters moving slow enough to avoid getting sucked too far down river. I gonna head there this evening (4:30ish) and see how it surfs.

Picture hosting site is not being cooperative, I'll see what I can do so yall can see it.

Sooo, it's playable, but, well here's a 'play-report':

The drop itself is river wide with side and middle eddys. The actual river-left play wave is retentive but transitions to a munchy hole wave-left. Flipping sucks because it's cold and there's that nagging death dam waiting if miss the eddy or swim. I think the whole two seconds I was upside-down was constant thoughts of "Gee, I hope I can roll in this ice-cold water and not die". I was done after like 15 minutes. Risk worth reward?...not worth it IMHO.

You mean the Weber below the confluence, above the 12W dam? That is an ok front surf, isn't it. Its more of a structure than I realized at higher water, riverwide structure; wish they had built it upstream of that dam a bit more.

Yeah, that one. It's a pretty major concrete ledge going across 90% of the river, More flow makes it nicer, but would move you down river faster (YIKES!!)

And the gates are open a little too much for any below-the-dam-outflow surf, but last winter I was able to surf it at extreme elf levels.

I took photos in the spring high water, but can't find them; must have deleted them. Figured it was too dangerous, so noone would be interested.
I just realized this wave is not on Google Maps (and Google Earth has one of the same images), so that must be a fairly old satellite image. Its here:
http://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=41.236844,-112.009149&hl=en&ll=41.236834,-112.00913&spn=0.000774,0.001321&sll=41.237051,-112.008885&sspn=0.001549,0.002642&vpsrc=6&t=w&mra=mift&mrsp=0&sz=19&z=20&layer=t

I think that left eddy is right below the wave.
